第5回ウェビナーでは、Japan SocietyのPresident & CEOであり、『Japan, Beyond the Genkan』の著者でもあるJoshua W. Walker氏を迎え、収録を行いました。これまでの第1回から第4回で、日本側の戦略、NYCで成功するためのマインドセット、エコシステムへの参入方法、参入後のスケールアップと段階的に議論を深めてきた本シリーズにおいて、本回は「日本がいかにして投資プレゼンスからイノベーションプレゼンスへシフトできるか」という、より本質的な問いに向き合う内容となっています。
ウェビナーでは、Japan Societyが120年近くにわたって果たしてきた日米の架け橋としての役割とともに、北海道で育ち日米双方を深く知るWalker氏が、日本が米国のイノベーション・エコシステムで存在感を高めるために何が必要かを率直に語っています。またパネルディスカッションでは、JETROニューヨークの中嶋氏の視点も交えながら、「玄関にとどまらず一歩踏み込むこと」の意味、信頼とクレディビリティの構築、そしてNew Yorkをグローバルなプレミアム・ショーケースとして活用する視点が議論されました。
日本はすでに対米最大級の直接投資国でありながら、スタートアップ・ベンチャーエコシステムにおける存在感はまだ経済規模に見合っていません。本回は、その溝を埋めるために日本のスタートアップ・大学・イノベーションリーダーが今何をすべきかを考える、シリーズの集大成ともいえる一回です。
Beyond the Genkan: From Investment Presence to Innovation Presence
In the fifth webinar, we welcomed Joshua W. Walker, President & CEO of Japan Society and author of Japan, Beyond the Genkan. Building on the first four sessions—which progressively explored Japan’s strategy, the mindset required to succeed in NYC, how to enter the ecosystem, and how to scale after entry—this session takes on a more fundamental question: how can Japan shift from an investment presence to an innovation presence?
Drawing on Japan Society’s nearly 120-year history as a bridge between the two countries, and on his own upbringing in Hokkaido and deep ties to Japan, Walker speaks candidly about what it truly takes for Japan to raise its profile within the American innovation ecosystem. The panel discussion, joined by the perspective of Mr. Nakajima of JETRO New York, explores what it means to move beyond the genkan into deeper engagement, how to build trust and credibility, and how to leverage New York as a premium global showcase.
Japan is already one of the largest foreign direct investors in the United States, yet its presence in the startup and venture ecosystem still falls short of the scale of its economy. Serving as a capstone to the series, this session considers what Japanese startups, universities, and innovation leaders should be doing now to close that gap.

第6回となる最終回ウェビナーでは、在ニューヨーク日本国総領事館の片平聡大使・総領事をお迎えします。これまでのNINEJP New York Ecosystem Webinarでは、日本の大学・スタートアップがなぜグローバルへ向かうのか、ニューヨークで求められるマインドセット、現地エコシステムへの入り方、事業を成長させるための方法、そして日米間で信頼を築く重要性について議論してきました。最終回となる本回では、その議論をさらに大きな視点へと広げ、地政学リスク、気候変動、AI、宇宙、ヘルスケアなど、世界が直面する課題に対して、日本発の次世代スタートアップや大学発技術がどのような役割を果たせるのかを考えます。
現在、AIや宇宙関連事業をはじめ、スタートアップが新たな産業を生み出し、社会や国際関係にも大きな影響を与える時代になっています。その中で、日本独自の文化・価値観、高い教育水準、ものづくりや研究開発の蓄積、そして社会課題に丁寧に向き合う姿勢は、世界課題の解決に向けた重要な力になり得ます。
本ウェビナーでは、経済外交の豊富な経験を持つ片平大使の視点から、地政学リスクが高まる時代におけるスタートアップの役割、グローバル・センターとしてのニューヨークの活用、日本だからこそ生み出せる新しい形のスタートアップ、そして日系企業・地域コミュニティ・支援機関が果たせる役割について議論します。
日本のスタートアップ、研究者、大学関係者が、単なる海外進出を超えて、世界課題に向き合う次世代の担い手となるために何が必要なのか。シリーズの締めくくりとして、これからの日米連携と日本発イノベーションの可能性を考える回です。
Can Japanese Startups Help Solve Global Challenges?
In the sixth and final session of the NINEJP New York Ecosystem Webinar Series, we will welcome Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consul General of Japan in New York. Throughout this series, we have explored why Japanese universities and startups should look globally, what mindset is required to succeed in New York, how to enter the local ecosystem, how to grow and scale in the U.S. market, and why trust is essential in U.S.–Japan collaboration. In this final session, we will expand the discussion to a broader question: what role can next-generation Japanese startups and university-born technologies play in addressing global challenges such as geopolitical risk, climate change, AI, space, healthcare, and energy?
Today, startups are no longer simply emerging companies. In fields such as AI and space, they are creating new industries and reshaping society, the economy, and even international relations. At the same time, global challenges are becoming more complex and interconnected. In this context, Japan’s unique culture and values, high level of education, strengths in manufacturing and research, and long-standing commitment to solving social challenges can become important assets for the world.
Drawing on Ambassador Katahira’s extensive experience in economic diplomacy, this webinar will discuss the role of startups in an era of rising geopolitical uncertainty, how Japanese innovators can leverage New York as a global center, what kinds of startups Japan is uniquely positioned to create, and how Japanese companies, local communities, and support organizations can help the next generation succeed.
As the concluding session of the series, this webinar will explore how Japanese startups, researchers, and universities can move beyond overseas expansion and become next-generation contributors to global problem-solving through U.S.–Japan collaboration.

Elan Fox氏は、ニューヨークを拠点に国際スタートアップの米国展開を支援するSOSAにて、アクセラレータープログラムを統括する。150社以上の海外スタートアップ支援に携わってきた経験をもとに、パートナーシップの構築、商業化の進め方、資金調達など、実務的な視点からNY市場での事業展開を支援している。
Elan Fox leads accelerator programs at SOSA, a New York-based organization supporting international startups entering and scaling in the U.S. market. Drawing on his experience working with over 150 international startups, he provides practical guidance on building partnerships, driving commercialization, and navigating fundraising in the U.S.
Anne-Sophie Mahle氏は、ニューヨーク市の経済開発を担う公的機関「New York City Economic Development Corporation（NYCEDC）」のDirector of International Partnershipsを務める。海外のスタートアップや大学・研究機関がニューヨークに進出・連携するための支援プログラムを統括し、グローバルなイノベーション・エコシステムの構築に取り組んでいる。
Anne-Sophie Mahle serves as Director of International Partnerships at the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), a public organization dedicated to driving economic growth in New York City. She oversees programs that support international startups, universities, and research institutions in establishing a presence and building connections in New York, working to foster a globally connected innovation ecosystem.
ムラト・アクティハノグル氏は、ニューヨークを代表するテクノロジー・アクセラレーター兼アーリーステージVC「ERA」の共同創業者でマネージング・パートナー。2011年の設立以来、全アクセラレーター・コホートおよび全ファンドを統括し、これまでに375社以上のスタートアップに投資してきた。
起業家・投資家・技術者・著者としても活躍。2008年には位置情報型SNS「Centrl」を創業。2007年には非営利団体「Entrepreneurs Roundtable」を設立し、ニューヨークのスタートアップ・コミュニティ形成に貢献している。
これまでAT&T、ソニー、パナソニックなど世界的企業で技術責任者を務め、テック系カンファレンスの登壇者としても知られる。米日カウンシル評議員なども歴任。
トルコ・ビルケント大学でコンピュータサイエンス修士号、電気・電子工学学士号を取得。
記念すべき第１回目は、室田浩司さん（京都大学 副理事（社会連携・イノベーション推進担当）兼 成長戦略本部 本部長）をお招きして、11月21日に収録を行ないました。
室田さんは、NINEJPにおいては、海外拠点の高度活用を担われておられます。
そこで、第1回目らしく、室田さんにNINEJPをはじめとした日本の大学におけるグローバル展開の方向性、そのなかでの米国東海岸における活動と今後の戦略に関して、お話しいただきました。
For our memorable first episode, we welcomed Mr. Koji Murota (Deputy Executive Director of Kyoto University, Director-General for the office of institutional advancement and communication) and recorded the session on November 21.
Mr. Murota is responsible for the advanced utilization of overseas hubs within NINEJP.
In this inaugural session, we asked him to discuss the direction of global expansion at NINEJP and Japanese universities along with current activities on the U.S. East Coast and the strategies moving forward.
